What type of Games are we playing
I noticed that if I play any faster than 20 mins I don't remember anything of the course. Should we consider slow games only? I know fast games are supposed to sharpen your tactics but wonder if they distract me from the trained mindset I need to learn. Any views?

as you can tell from our games tonight "10min" games are not for me. I just can not get my brain working. From the beging of the course I have been playing 20 min+ games. I find that I work best with this time controll. I have not played anything grater than 30 min's online. It's to bad I can't find anyone to play over the board in my area. We do not have an active club.

40 5 is what I play at ICC, though I admit I do some blitz 2 12 which I don't believe helps at all except perhaps for openings. There are people with 20000 games that are still rated 1000, so it can't help all that much with tactics (unless you run the games through Fritz to find the tactics, and actually do postmortems on them).
Re: What type of Games are we playing
First slow games to form the thoughtproces. Once you feel you have the thoughtproces under your belt you can start playing with quicker timecontrols.
For tactics is best you learn where pieces belong (knight on g5, Q on b1-h7 diagnal, ... ) for wich kind of tactics instead of memorizing solutions to certain problems. This one can practise in blitz but like mentioned it doesn't help to build the ICS thoughtproces unless you already have it under your belt.

If anyone was interested. I won game one, second game was lost on time - with a forced mate from "chess?" in 2 moves anyway.

I'm holding back on speed chess until after month 5 when we're supposed to have a complete repertoire on the theory that I will just get into bad habits if I start now. Currently I'm playing OTB weekend tournaments about once a month. I have an ICC account now and follow some of the games just to see how it works.
