What a better choice to learn than to try the concepts in the theory in real games.
This game i've just played after reading the king01 and king02 games of the course of this month, illustrates it.

I decided to give it a try after the fancy 2... f5 move of my opponent that opens 'e' file for free.
Here is the result, i can call it: "when applying the lesson, doesn' t work as well as in the book" geek

It is very short, have a look at it.
I was almost there...

When I'm looking at this game I'm thinking back to the "king safety" lessons.

If let's say there was no error and the game continued if black castled long he then white king is not that secure at all. Black could of pushed h pawn and he has the rook right behind this. He is looking at the very good attack!

Haven't read those lessons of month two yet (start only today with month two) so my question may be totally beside the point.

Is 8. Nd4 not better then Ne5 so that after 8. ... Qxb5 or 8. ... axb5 white can play 9. Nxf5 so that after 9. ... exf5 the e-file is open for a direct attack to the black king with Re1?

lack of f7 black pawn is best exploited when you can play Qh5+ (Nf6 is missing too). So I would play 5. Ne5, opening the d1-h5 diagonal and attacking Nc6. in the worst case i will double the black c pawns. I have enought time to castle, no need to hurry; anyway black king is more unsafe. white has lead in development (Nc6 is pinned), he should play forcing moves that put black in defensive, if possible.

Randy, I though also of Qh5 but was very annoyed by g7-g6 that threaten the queen also. So i will have 3 pieces attacked by pawns.

It's a good idea not to castle and take advantage of the position, but i still have great difficulties to commit myself to raise an attackt so early in the opening.

Chesstiger, seems the way to go, but after analysing the trap turns against me i think, if 'e' file open and king goes to f7 after check, black rook can come to e8 and now it is me who have a sleeping a8 rook, while black has a very compact position on kingside.

Fanat, i don't think my king is so bad in g2 for example, because there is no more light bishop, and row 1 is free, so i can activate both rooks, and h pawn is suddently no so happy.

Whatever, it was just a first try and it's normal if it's flawed.
Thanks for the comments, they were helpful.

HK.. I think it took a lot of bottle to publish a game (especially given the outcome). I am impressed however with the level of engagement and feedback it has received. Once I learn to publish I'll do the same - maybe aim for a game per week. (BDK - Would this be too much space usage for the server if we all tried this?)

Hoopy: that should be fine. Publish away! If we hit problems we'll deal with them then. I plan to post games too, it would be nice to a do a full game looking at the CSQ and such on each move.

Probably I'm being harsh but....Anyone work out why the annotaed games not available on browser version? Maybe a minor complaint but I don't carry a chess set about with me & don't like to "destroy trees" unless essential. I don't think they make full use of internet used here. It supports the comment on one of other boards that course probably still in development and we are the early adopters ( guinea pigs)...depends if you are optomist or pessimist I suppose!!

I think this is an adaptation from a course that has been around for many years, since 2003:

Well spotted sir. I suppose it backs up the point that it is probably evolving towards using the internet. But not quite there yet.

I think the idea is to print out the games to play them on a real board. I would not be too concerned with killing trees in order to study chess. There are so many truly terrible wastes of paper, but chess games are not one of them!! If you get your bank statements, and credit card statements, and newspapers on line, I figure you can go ahead and print out a few chess games. Cool

I don't have a board in front of me so this analysis has to be blindfold! Here is my suggestion. After 2 ... f5 White should get an advantage but it is difficult to see how.

I have a feeling the simplest is to grab space with e5, but if you do grab the pawn instead, you probably need to hang on to it for a while at least - otherwise you have spent a tempo to exchange a central pawn for a wing pawn and develop the opponents Bc8.

4. Nh4 also threatens Qh5+ if 4... Nf6 then 5 d4 with the intention of playing Bg5 and exchanging on f6 to reintroduce the Qh5 threat. Also Black' king is a long way from castling. For example 5 ... e6 6 Bd3 intending to 0-0 if black plays ef. This seems awkward for Black.

The idea is to hold the f pawn for a while to hinder Black's development by creating tactical threats due to the control over e6 and e7. CSQ Black's f5 loses time and reduces Black's control of the while squares on the K-side.

Good remark, it's true that i eat the f5 black pawn, and do not take advantage of it, since i let my own pawn hanging and black just grab it. I must be more confident in continuing the actions i start.

When i analyse my games, i noticed that when i was able to get some small advantage in a game (engine scores something like +0.7), the 2 or 3 moves that follow often take me back to the equal position (score +0.1 or +0.2).

I think it is because, i'm still not fully able to recognize such an advantage when it is there, and consequently, i do not put pressure at the key instant.

Nice comment, i've just realized something about my play.

A very good illustration of king into the center !
Unfortunately at my expense...

Why do i show this game ?
In fact i had the great chance to play a GM today : Vitaly Kiselev (2500 elo).

It seems he just started his accound at ICC so he has to play newbies like me until his ELO raise (he was 1711 when i played him, and he is already 1850, one hour later).

Well, i'm not very proud of my play, i had the feeling of being outplayed from the beginning till the end, but since a such occasion is very rare, here is the game.

Look especially at the 15. Nd6+! move.
