Bird Brain

Post by Blue Devil Knight on May 12th 2009, 9:05 pm

A blog post I wrote trying to decide between two different branches of Bird's opening:

If anyone here has insights, ideas, please let me know! There is a lot of good talent on this site so I value your inputs.

I don't play or answer Bird very often, i have less only 10 or 15 games with it in 2 years. So i reserve my answer.

I would prefer Larsen position, seems more simpler, in the other position the queenside is just no developped at all, and this will inevitably lead to complicated things.

I usually avoid Larsen with 1. f4 g6 (I play Accelerated Dragon as Black, so at 2.e4 I am happy to play 2...c5). plans with g6/d6 followed by an early e5 can be used to counter Bird. I am not sure that playing standard Dutch with reversed colours is the best way to play against Bird, maybe black can do better.

I never got opponents that started with 1. f4 (g4, the grob opening i did get against) so i can only say that the Larsen looks better because of the better development of the queen's bishop, with other words one doesn't get such cramped position as in the classical line.

I decided to go with d4, using the Bird as a less frequent surprise weapon.
