Well, I've almost got the 1.d4 repertoire committed to memory. But just how well are we prepared after we've mastered the material, and are there any holes in the white repertoire?

To find out I sent up a little experiment, an engine competition between rybka(human) playing the white pieces with the ICS 1.d4 repertoire, and a rybka(human)(copy) playing a Club Player level book I constructed.

I constructed the Club Player book from games that are representative of competive competition in my area. That is, I selected games from players with ratings between 1600-2300 which were played between 2006 through 2010.

The engine competition was just set up to give a quick look at the repertoires, so 25 games at 60 moves/minute.

So... Here's the good news:

The ICS repertoire finished with a solid plus score: +9 =12 -4. A 60% performance, much better than the 55% expected for 1.d4.

Average moves to the last book move was 5.2 for the ICS repertoire vs 5.5 for the Club Player book. Shortest was 1 move for the ICS Repertoire, and 2 for the Club Player; longest was 11 moves for both.

And... The bad news:

Black easily slipped out of the book early with 1....e6 into an Exchange French, and 1....g6 the Modern Defense. In some games White transposed back into the Book, but didn't in either of these variations.

So, not bad overall, just some minor cleanup to fill the gaps.

I suppose it shouldn't be surprising, but playing against a GM book constructed from games where both players are above 2450 is more of an advantage to the ICS repertoire since white stays in it's book longer.

Average to last book move 5.6 moves. Result +15 =7 -3 (74%)!

I've been using the ICS reportoire against all the Indian defences and have scored fairly well.

The problem for me is that quite often my opponent will play 1...d6 or 1...e6 and get out of reportoire immediately.

I've faced 1.d6 4 times now over the board which means it occurs more often in my games than the Kings Indian, Benoni, Benko etc. We need something on that for sure.

I've added a couple of lines to the White's repertoire to improve the initial moves that at least keeps the opportunity to transpose back into the repertoire in a move or two. At least have something ready. Seems simple enough, but I still need to analyze to make sure I didn't put anything stupid in.

I'm just into month 4 now, so I've only just started getting into the Black's repertoire. From the course outline I don't see where they get into 1.d6 or even the English!
