I have around 25 days left before my FIDE rated tournament. I would like to know how do you folks prepare before it?

1) DO you play less online blitz or totally stop it?

2) Most of the tournaments are 1 hour 30 mins + 30 secs increment, which straightaway means a lot of calm thinking unlike blitz, so how do you folks prepare for that? Do you play with any dummy chess personalities like in Chessmaster GM, setting yours and computer's time to 1hr 30 mins + 30 secs?

3) Any other changes you invoke in your day to day routine, a month before the tournament, or when it gets close?

4) How do you'll spend the time after returning home from the tournament and before the next day? Do you spend time in other things than chess to freshen up? Or do you'll do tactics training or related chess stuff?

5) Do you'll recommend playing with chess engines with same time as tournament, as i have said in question 1) in between the matches (after you return home a day after a match and before the start of next day)

6) Any other change like in food habits? Laughing

7) Please feel free to add any other things you recommend doing or you do in between the matches days.

Hi

One thing I´ll try next tournament is to focus on a specific aspect of the game that I feel like improving. This may be to play very agressively or very prophylactic or maybe try to play positional gambits when ever possible etc.

best,

When preparing for a competition I depart from my normal study habits (which is basically study of the ICS materials) and focus on the openings.

1. Play on the computer against several different opening books. Normally I study openings with Chess Opening Wizard where I have ported all of the ICS repertoire. Playing against the computer opening books familiarizes me with the repertoire and the transition into the middle game. I play a time control to 25 percent of the upcoming tournamnet time control and abort / adjudicate the position after 15-20 moves. This has been useful to cure my time control problems and ready me for unexpected moves.

2. Following tournaments I look at my games, particularly the openings and make any adjustments to the repertoire where necessary. Generally I know where I went wrong or right in the games, but the are also many surprises!

3. Even though I've gone over all of the ICS materials I still make a lot of mistakes during games. Now, in my second year the focus is on playing and applying the principles in a consistant way, along with a structure review of the first year.

Not too much blitz before a tournament, that's for sure. Blitz is to chess as blogging is to great literature.

Except every chess player loves blitz, but not everyone loves blogging!

How do you say so? Do Americans write too bad english?? Twisted Evil I wrote FIDE and USCF as these are the most popular rated tourneys.
By the way, you haven't replied to my original question (How do you prepare for tourneys).

Thanks for your answer, these days i am focusing more on tactics. I think 95% of time i am concentrating on tactics and very little play. What do you say so, can it be the recommended way?

I don't think so. I think it is more productive analyse your own and master games in you opening repertoire unless you are seriously deficient in tactics. But playing is the best way to improve.

There was an interesting comment by GM Bojkov in the introduction to his book A Course in Chess Tactics where he states "Inevitably a chess player learns by trial and error...". A related comment was made by GM Yermolinsky during his commentary on the World Cup this weekend during which he stated that he had never even seen a book on tactics until after he had become a GM.

I do about 30 non-timed tactical puzzles daily to sharpen up, try to remember all that ICS has taught me (lol), and try to get lots of sleep.

That's really all I can do.
