Hi,
I've been playing for a long time (since the Fischer years in the early 70's!). I peaked at 2100 about 20 years ago, then didn't play much for a long time. I've been playing more than ever for the past 5 years but my rating has slipped into the low 1900's. I feel like I know more about the game then before...I'm just having trouble actually winning the games that I used to win. My openings are pretty solid but somewhere my thinking is flawed in coming up with the correct plan and executing it. I really enjoy playing now but it's frustrating not being able to get back up over 2000 (or higher).
Does anyone else fit this profile? If so, have you found that ICS is helping you?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Frankly, I think it would be perfect for someone like you. The course is a bit too advanced for me as my games are all decided by simple tactics and positional knowledge rarely plays a decisive role in my games.

For planning and such, this course is great.

Also, you are the 99th member of this forum, one more and we'll have a century!!!

I think I fit the same profile as you FlyingRook, but perhaps not quite as strong. I am finding that, provided I don't stuff up and miss some tactics, I am really struggling to know how to proceed when my opponent is good enough to not hand me some tactics.

In other words, I am starting to often get games where both my opponent and I aren't giving over tactics and so positional concepts become a major factor and I find myself floundering.

I have never known that a bishop is stronger than a knight in an endgame with pawns on both sides of the board. Things like this have never been shown to me and I have never run into/realised this fact with just experience. This is one of the first things I have learned from ICS.

I am only at the end of month 1, but I have high hopes that this course will make my chess strong enough to make a significant difference..

Hi Flyingrook. I fit your frofile perfectly. I stopped playing chess in mid nineties and I started playing again in november 2008. I had 2140 ELO and now 1964. Does it mean I am weaker now? I don't think so, I believe I am stronger because I have more knowledge. Why do I lose elo points? In my case this is happening because the young players don't have their elo matching their strength or they can play a wonderful game followed by a horrible one. If you play against them in their good day you are going to lose a lot of elo points but if you win you gain only a couple points. Conclusion: don't bother with your elo or this will take the fun out of chess.
Also I want to add that ICS course will help you a lot, you have a good knowledge of the game and these lessons will open a new scenerario for your games and the way you look at the game will be more enjoyable as you know exactly what is going on and how you should continue. I hope I did help you.

Thank you all for your replies. I've decided to give it a try. The timing is good because my next tournament is 3 months away and I'm planning to play about 5 times through the fall and winter. I'll post on the forum as I get more involved in the lessons.
