How well you get ICS thought process Empty How well you get ICS thought process

Post by Tweety January 26th 2010, 7:53 am

Being on the first month, fifteen days since I started the course, I played my first slow game (90 min plus 30 sec per move) yesterday. So it was the first time I tried to implement the thought process and this was really hard because I had to change my bad thought process for this new, and much better, ICS one. My question to all of you who are months ahead of me is if the thought process is something you do without thinking of it or, on the other hand, you still have to remember to do it, wasting your time clock on it instead of using it on the board position like it happened to me yesterday. Fortunately I was much better player than my opponent and it wasn't difficult to win the game, but to be honest my brain was a mess with todo list, cqs, and the fact I had to move, the best possible move, this was too much pressure for me so I did a dangerous mixed of my thought process and ICS one.
Common, let us know how well you get the ICS thought process and if you have been able to break your bad thinking habits.
My answer is that I am working of it it is too early to notice an improvement.
Thank you.

The good news. Yes you follow the process. You understand the position much better. Your Plans make sense. You have more insight into what is happening. Your ability to calculate improves. You create more winning positions against better players.
The bad news. I have lost more games on time in the last six months than in the rest of my chess career put together.

How long did it take you to follow the process unconsciously?

If the truth be told I need it to be conscious or I forget. I think it comes naturally after a while but every 10 or so moves it is worth rechecking.

I was afraid you said that. It will take a lot of time to get used to this new system. Hopefully with a great deal of training we can cope with this task that I think it is the most difficult part we are facing to improve chess.

The best time to apply it is with practice problems. I think if you think too much about thinking during a real game it will screw you up. Smile

You are right. Practice is the answer. In order to get the new process I want to start using it against the computer rather than with humans, play some games with Fritz trying to use only ICS process. I will let you know how it works. Also I am going to use a database from Fritz Technique Trainer by Henrik Schloessner, they are winning positions to play against fritz.

Hey BDK today I decided to try the same thing. I'm going to use Chessmaster 11 as the personalities are quite fun on there with the ability to set up all different kinds of tournaments and leagues, plus it calculates your rating.

I played a game today with 90 mins for the first 40 moves and 15 mins to finish, basically the same as most club chess here in the uk.

I lost my first game today though, but as it was only a computer game it doesn't really matter.

I'm doing ok in over the board chess, I had won seven in a row until blundering in a completely won position last week. I'm finding it difficult to make the next big leap. My grade was 122 ECF last year and based on this years games so far, it's virtually unchanged, just up to 125. I did start the season facing much stronger players however and only won a single game of my first ten, so I've done well to recover from that really.

I'm getting back into the course after a little layoff and have decided to ditch online play altogether, instead playing slow time control games against the computer if I want to practice.
