Hello,
I am a tournament player of 44 years duration, considering coming back after a 10 year layoff. I am rated 1854 USCF, peak 1931. I subscribed to ICS as I wanted a structured course in contrast to my usual dabbling. I had previously taken lessons from GM Lev Alburt, which were excellent. He followed the famous Russian Goelinischev course. But with 2 children approaching college, I needed something more flexible in terms of schedule and lower in price. I am also planning to play some matches with my silicone friends in lieu of tournaments. Not ideal of course, but better than just playing blitz on ICC.

Welcome, and good luck. I wish I could get into playing the computer. For some reason when I'm not playing a real person I don't care about the outcome as much. I just ended up playing slow games on ICC instead because slow games against Fritz weren't doing it for me.

Is there some way you get motivated to play the computer?

Welcome Steinitz,

I am in my third month of this course and it has been changed the way I think about chess (for the better).

There is an opposite approach. Lots of Blitz on ICC or playchess. It is like kids with computer games. Just one more fix so that i finish with a win. & then when you do win. I'm on a roll lets have another game.

Isuues -
It is not recomended that you do this as you do not study position or follow the plans laid out in ICS. I tend to concur.
You learn nothing with Blitz. Rubbish - it is a fantastic way to learn opening theory.

I find if you mix Blitz with chess & the two are different you learn more.

it worked then. In very simple terms I recommend play people on the computer including blitz.
Even Blitz can be educational as well as adictive

By the way how do you keep a mad man in suspense?...
