Opposite side castling.

I have computed some statistics regarding castling in my games, i notice that 60% of the time i castle on the same side as my opponent and only 15% on the opposite (stats are almost identical for black/white).

First question, what are your stats ?

Second question, is this aspect discussed in ICS course ? Till now, i have not seen it.

I wonder if i should do more than this.

Mainly opposite castling occurs in Sicilian positions for me, but not always.

When I played the Bird as white, if black played the (reversed) response that they recommend for white, I would jump for joy as it let me get control over the light squares with b3/Bb2 (or in the case of the Dutch b6/Bb7). Instead I'm using Cox's suggestion against the Dutch as found in his great 'Starting Out: 1d4' book: 1 d4 f5 2 g3.

The line they recommend at ICS is 1 d4 f5 2 Nc3, which gives up too much. For one, it stops you from getting in c4. For another, it lets them get in b6/Bb7 ...

I won a lovely game tonight on playchess. I was playing a much lower rated player but he played fairly solidly for his level, no bad blunders at least not early on and I was really pleased with the way I was able to win his crucial central d pawn, destroy his center and then pounce with a devastating coordinated attack that cumilated in a lovely Queen sac and Royal Fork. It's the first time I've had such a satisfying end to a game and I really feel the ICS material has been the key, for the ...

I'm hearing all the time that people should play open games at the start of their career to improve tactics.

I'm thinking of trying out e4 to improve tactics (which definitely needs lots of improvement) and improve my attacking chess. At my level I don't need to know tons of opening theory as most of my games are decided in the late middlegame or endgames.

So a question for more experienced players - how much truth is there in the benefit of playing open games? Should I answer e4 ...

What are the annotated games and examples for the 1.d4 openings in Months 10-13 like?

Do they have well annotated games for all, or most of the 1.d4 openings? Is there a nice amount of material, how many games are we talking each month?

I've worked through all of their Indian Defences 1.d4 Nf6 now, from the Dutch to Kings Indian and whether it's a great module or a poor one really depends on how they follow up the last 3 months.

I'm hoping we will get at least 2 or 3 model games ...

I played semi-seriously when I was a kid, but sort of let it go as I got older. Recently, I brushed against chess again and I realized just how much I love the game. I'm looking forward to working through the course material. It looks good.

My question is for the people who saw the material ICS provided for the French Defence in Month 9. I don't have a lot of experience with the French but it seems that the lines ICS recommends are a bit aggressive vs. the main lines?

Am I impression correct?

Against 1.d4 I play Nimzo as Black as per "Chess Openings for Black..." by Lev Alburt et al. So I was interested in the ICS line, purely from the point of view of whether it causes any problems to my Black lines. I followed the ICS line for 4.f3, move for move against Lev's book. Guess what? They both track the same game! [Volkov,S (2558)-Shaposhnikov,E (2514)/Tomsk 2001]. However ...

The reason I'm asking is because I like to run the annotated games in rybka and on my chess board at the same time SO i want to save the games for the next time i study. On a side note this is the first time I've studied chess, does anyone want to suggest the order i should go about Month 1 and/or Study methods. Any help Will be greatly appreciated

While practicing tacticals with ct-art, i found this very interesting position, fitting very well in the ICS pawn lessons.

It is white's turn, and one may think that the position is hopeless since the bishop will have difficulties to hold the position on the queenside against the rook, even if white has some pawns up.

In fact, white can improve his position by eliminating all the weak squares.

This is done by :

Hi everyone,

I'm a kind of total newbie in chess -- played only a few tens of games in a lifetime. Would ICS be useful at this level? I've been looking for exact same systematic approach to learning, but it looks like ICS is mostly targeted to decent players. Does it make sense to supplement ICS with a book or two, learn at lower pace, etc? Or may be there are similar tutorials for beginners?

Thanks for any advice.

Instead of giving up, I'm thinking about switching to the online/chessbase versions of the lessons instead of taking all that time to print out all the pdfs, set it up over the board, etc..

Anyway, if anyone has ideas on how to do the course in a sort of "lazy" way just because ...

Well Kasparov did stop not so long ago (2005 i think), but Karpov is in the circuit since very long time, and didn't stop playing tournaments, despite his elo i going down and down.

At the moment the score is 2-0 for an easy Kasparov, it's always interesting to see them playing.

The match is playing in 4 rapid games (25/5) and 8 blitz games.

It seems that ICS has good theory on attack. Seems like they've condenced the whole "Art of Attack" into their notes.

My question is that what does everybody think of the ICS' material on the "kings safety/attacking the king"?

Is it enough theory for an intermediate player and I should just go over more annotated games on the topic?

I ask this because i find a lot of opponents playing it against me, and it's generally not very successful.

Here is the typical way i answer to it, giving chess with bishop, and take the knight in order to avoid let the bishop hanging if white queen gives check, then defend with the knight manoeuver Nf6,Ne4,Ng5 on the kingside.

This book looks like perfect material to complement this course! It's release in July sometime according to Amazon and I can't wait for it, just look at the contents and course layout, it covers the same themes and should be really helpful.

Got my first grading today

Finally the ECF have got around to updating their annual ECF grades.

Mine is 123 which is not bad for a first year, equating to around 1600 as explained below, actually 1584 under elo conversion and 1634 Fide so 1600 is a solid middle figure.

CONVERSION BETWEEN FIDE ELO, OTHER NATIONAL ELO RATINGS AND ECF GRADINGS

ECF x 8 + 650 = FIDE

(FIDE - 650) / 8 = ECF

ECF x 8 + 600 = National Elo

(National Elo - 600) / 8 = ECF

This means that in some minor level tournaments ...

Hi All,

Great Forum. I just joined ICS for my kid. In BDK's words, I am one of those annoying "f??king hummingbird parents".

I learn chess togahter with my kid, only plays with him and never attended a tournament.

My kid played for about 2 years, plays only OTB games, current elo 1600+. First month's material looks great. Hope the course will bring him to the next level (2000?).

New Chess Improvement Plans

After my less than satisfactory tournament results at the British this week I've decided I need to restock and come up with a coherent and efficient training plan.

If anyone cares to give some imput that will be great.

1) My first idea is JUST to concentrate on ICS alone now as far as studying is concerned. I'm the kind of person who loves to dip in and out of books, starting one, then dropping it for another. Since my harddrive crash and the loss of the first 5 chapters of Yusupov's ...

On the ICS site the site mentions that a secondary opening they teach is the Dutch. Anyone know what variation of the Dutch. Is it classical, Stonewall, Lenigrad? Thanks
